Why Protect Against Flooding With BlueFIN™ Flood Walls?
The BlueFIN™ interconnecting flood panel is a rapidly deployable flood wall system that can be installed by a small crew quickly in advance of a storm. BlueFIN’s innovative rapid connection system allows panels to be placed alongside each other and connected instantly using a series of easy-to-use industrial latches. These latches pressurize the seal between panels, creating a durable integrated flood wall. Additional closed-cell HDPE rubber seal on the underside prevents leakage beneath panels.
Additionally, BlueFIN™ is lightweight, yet strong, due to its engineered composite honeycomb core. This structural core is surrounded by durable 6063-T6 aluminum extrusions which provide a rigid support frame that allows the system to handle extreme hydrodynamic and hydrostatic loads, while also creating a durable connection between sections.
Flood panel sections connect to form an L-shaped flood barrier, which is ballasted downward as floodwater rises against the panels. Diagonal support braces and anchoring cables are designed to resist lateral (horizontal) forces - such as wind, seismic activity, or racking forces — by transferring these loads through tension cables and compression loads down to the ballasted base.
For additional wind resistance, in advance of flooding, BlueFIN™ features a ground mounting bracket that attaches to the front of the water facing flood panel and an optional aircraft grade anchoring cable that spans diagonally from the top of each panel to the dry-side ground behind.

How Does the BlueFIN™ Flood Wall System Work?
The BlueFIN™ flood panel consists of an engineered composite honeycomb and structural fiberglass core, similar to what is used on high-end boats. This core is surrounded by durable 6063-T6 aluminum extrusions which provide a rigid support frame that both allows the system to handle extreme loads, but also provides an area for a durable connection between sections.
The main panels interconnect to form a continuous L-shaped barrier, and also includes corner or turn panels for full perimeter protection.
Panels are ballasted downward on the water side by the floodwaters themselves. Diagonal support braces are designed to resist lateral (horizontal) forces by transferring these loads through tension cables and compression down to the ballasted base.
For additional wind resistance, in advance of flooding, BlueFIN™ features a 316L marine grade stainless steel ground mounting bracket that attaches to the front of the water facing ground panel, and an optional aircraft grade cable that spans diagonally from the top of each panel to the dry-side ground behind.

Latch Connection System
BlueFIN™ Flood Walls feature a rapid proprietary connection system that allows for quick system assembly, and the fast release of panels. An array of sections can be removed from within and reinstalled as needed, allowing for egress routes to be left open until the last moment, when a perimeter must be sealed against floodwaters.
Ground Anchoring System
Ground anchor plates are used to provide additional stability for BlueFIN™, especially during hurricane conditions. Stainless steel plates are designed to latch over and hook onto the BlueFIN™ aluminum frame extrusions, locking panels into position. Plates are then bolted into the ground using varying anchor plates depending on the type of surface.
Wind Resistance Cable
Optional anchor cables are used to provide additional wind and storm resistance against hurricane force winds. Aircraft grade cables span from an eyebolt located at the top of the upright panel to the ground on the dry-side of the panel. Depending on the ground surface, a variety of anchors may be used to attach the cables.

Position and Bolt Panels
The bottom of the upright panel has a specialized overhanging extrusion, with a rubber gasket, that is designed to overlap the frame of the bottom panel.
Lift and position the upright panel such that it rests alongside the bottom panel, with the overhanging lip positioned over the bottom panel extrusion.
Align the top panel with the bolt holes on the overlap bolt holes on the bottom panel frame.
Note: Before bolting into position, ensure that the rubber gasket located on the underside of the overlapping lip is securely fastened.
Install Diagonal Support Braces
Place diagonal cross braces into position inside the lower panel bracket and lean towards the upright panel.
Utilize the included cotter pins to lock each support leg into position at both the bottom bracket and the top bracket.
Note: Panels 4ft or lower utilize one cross brace per panel, while panels 6ft or over utilize 2 cross braces per panel.
Assembled panels can be transported and positioned as a single unit, but care should be taken to support the bottom panel when moving sections.
Latch Panels Together
Position panels alongside each other, such that the rubber seal on one side of the panel abuts the aluminum frame on the adjacent panel.
Pull out the latch lever and extend the latch loop across and between panels, and over the receiver hook on the adjacent panel.
The connector loop tension can be adjusted by tightening or loosing the loops threading within the latch mechanism.
Lock each latch so that panels are bound together, causing the panels to seal between the connected flood panel section.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
-
BlueFIN™ flood walls connect to each other using a unique manual latching system, designed to pull, tension and seal panels together as they are connected. Latches can be disconnected and individual panels can be removed or left out as needed for egress or to leave a gap for traffic, until the flood wall needs to be fully sealed.
-
BlueFIN™ flood panels are designed to be easy to deploy. When connecting BlueFIN panels to create a flood wall the two sections of the panels, transported flat, need to be connected in an L-Shape configuration. This is achieved by tightening inserting bolts into the overhanging protrusion strip, located at the bottom of the upright panel and into the frame of the horizontal ground panel. A standard allen wrench is used to tighten these down.
Otherwise, there are no tools required to deploy or attach BlueFIN panels.
-
The BlueFIN™ flood barrier is manufactured using high quality extruded 6063 T-6 Aluminum frames and supports and composite honeycomb FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced) panels. Optional wind anchoring cables are aircraft grade stainless steel and all hardware is 316L marine grade stainless steel.
-
The bottom BlueFIN™ panel has specialized rubber EPDM seals, which create a strong seal with the surface below. There is also a seal running along the side of each BlueFIN panel, designed to seal between sections when connected. Finally, there is a rubber seal between panels at the intersection of the “L”.
Because the BlueFIN is ideally suited for asphalt and concrete applications, where the best seal can be achieved, some consideration should be given to less even ground surfaces. As the BlueFIN ground panels are only minimally flexible, and while there is some flexibility to the EPDM seal, the ground should be inspected, leveled and patched, where needed to achieve the optimal seal.
-
The standard BlueFIN™ modular flood wall panels can handle floods up to 8ft, with custom sizes going up to 9ft.
-
The installation time for BlueFIN™ depends on the height of panels deployed and the installation environment, but a good rule of thumb is that one 3ft wide x 8ft panel takes approximately 10 minutes for 2 people to deploy, meaning 100ft of protection should take two people about 5 hours. Additional personnel can be deployed to speed installation.
Note: Much of the time involved in installing panels is tied to transporting the panels to the location where they will be installed. For large projects, we always advise having a pickup truck, gator, or other vehicle to assist in transporting panels to the install location.
-
Yes. The BlueFIN is fully reusable and is designed to last 10+ years with proper storage and handling. The only items that may need to be periodically changed, depending on usage level, are the rubber seals.
-
Yes - we offer 90 degree and 45 degree turn sections that allow you to make a turn with BlueFIN. This is ideal when using BlueFIN to protect an entire perimeter or for customized installation configurations.
-
BlueFIN™ needs to be installed on a relatively flat surface, so that a good seal is created between the panel and the floor. As the water level rises, the downward pressure on the panels enhances the seal, minimizing leakage and enhancing protection.
-
You can hose down or pressure wash the Panels after use, making sure to clear away any stuck on debris. Be careful not to damage of the rubber seals if using a pressure washer. Standard household cleaners can be used to clean stubborn dirt. Stack sections after they are completely dry.
